DOROTHY
jhimm, written 1993
the merchant of venice told the girl with red shoes
to follow the yellow river to the land of truth
and though she owned nothing and the river was long
she started sailing off, singing this song
after five years of sailing, the river it ends
in the middle of a city made of honey and green sand
in the square there was an alter, where Dorothy did sit
she laughed at the truth, she said "i just don't see it"
the land of oz and make believe, orange horses and color TV's
always running from what's behind, the future's worse cause its in your mind
forever fighting to not grow old, an endless battle so we are told
not preparing for what's ahead, memories dragging like a ton of lead
the merchant of venice told me a tale or two
of the beast that's in my closet, that lives on red shoes
he said "son please be wary although its old and blind"
i told him not to worry, cause the thing's a friend of mine
the land of oz and make believe, orange horses and color TV's
always running from what's behind, the future's worse cause its in your mind
forever fighting to not grow old, an endless battle so we are told
not preparing for what's ahead, memories dragging like a ton of lead
toy cars & make believe, chasing crickets and climbing trees
always looking for a friend of mine, hiding in the closet of my mind
always fighting to not grow old, a futile battle no ground to hold
lie quiet, tucked in my bed, memories running wild in my head
the land of oz and make believe, orange horses and color TV's
always running from what's behind, the future's worse cause its in your mind
forever fighting to not grow old, an endless battle so we are told
not preparing for what's ahead, memories drag me screaming out of bed
in the square there was an alter, on which i was thrown
then the beast told me to rot there, until i am grown
he said "son please be wary, when you've grown old and blind"
but i don't plan to live in fear, even when i've lost my mind
